8,789 Words of Wisdom

I have had this book "8,789 Words of Wisdom" that I randomly pick up and read. It's 618 pages of one liner quotes that are useful in day to day life. I have had this book for 5+ years now and I have not finished reading it.  It is a goal of mine to fully read this book, and to be live by the wisdom from the book.

To successfully achieve my goal within the next year, I am going to commit my self to write about the wisdom in my blog in a creative way.

Marketing Candidate

I have been looking for Marketing Specialist / Associate Marketing Manager for my company (Evolve Discovery) and have not been able to find couple individuals for over 4-5 months.  It’s been so frustrating because my marketing department is suffering so much because of lack of dedicated and skilled talent towards marketing only.

We have had about 500+ candidates and interviewed at least 30+, yet I am unable to find someone. I believe the three biggest challenges in finding someone fit for the position has been: 
•Lack of education / experience 
•Lack of design / technical skills, specifically Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Dreamweaver 
•Cultural fit

We did send out couple offer letters, but both have declined, with one astonishing me beyond I can imagine.

Interviewing Candidates - Key Questions

As part of my job, I have become an interviewer for a lot of positions at my company. Sometimes I do the first interview and other times, I come in during the second phase of the interview process.

As I have interviewed more and more people, I have developed some key questions that are outside of the standard questions. Standard questions meaning: background, why interested in position, why left old job, strengths, weaknesses, 5 year plan, etc.

Here are my two key questions that impact my decision to move forward with candidate or not:

1) Given that you were being paid what you wanted, what would be your ideal job?
I ask this question because that tells me quiet a bit about a person. For me, if your ideal job is to design clothing, then why are you not doing it? Usually, if the person says there ideal job is somewhere align the lines of what they are applying for, it gives a good feeling that they are where they WANT to be.

2) What is your definition of stress and how do you handle stress?

Master of Business Administration (MBA 2011)

When I was in high-school and parts of undergrad school, I had  a very  disconnected feeling from the word "MBA". Little did I know , I dropped another Masters degree to pursue an MBA, which I achieved in 2011 from Golden Gate University.

Now, I can't imagine not being in a business environment and have a very strong passion for everything related to leading, managing, and growing a business.


Book: What Should I Do With My Life?

I am currently reading "What Should I Do With My Life?" by Po Bronson. I read this book few years back (high school or college) and I am reading it again. I truly believe that every time I read this book, I get a new perspective on life. This time, I will actually be writing about it as I didn't when I first read it.

Side story about the book: When I was returning from my business trip from LA to SF (May 24, 2012). I was reading this book at the airport while waiting to board and some guy walked up to me, handed me a bible and said, "Here is the answer the question of your book." He walked away without allowing me speak to him, but I managed to get him his bible back.

High-Level Role

I currently work as the Director of Corporate Development at Evolve Discovery. I was hired on as the Associate Director of Marketing in 2010 and once I got my MBA and had extended my role to all different parts of the company, I got promoted to Director of Corporate Development. Evolve Discovery is a legal technology company with over 100 employees with multiple office location: San Francisco (HQ), Palo Alto, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix and New York.  It’s a litigation support management and electronic discovery company servicing Fortune 500 companies and AMLaw 100 law firms.
